MONTREAL, Canada (AhlulBayt News Agency) - The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) has invested $1 million in training officers to better understand Muslim culture.
According to information obtained by the newspaper La Press, almost 600 RCMP employees have been trained since 2007 - a move partly sparked by the 2006 Maher Arar case.
The U.S. government deported Arar, a Canadian citizen, to Syria, where he was tortured for a year.
The RCMP have been accused of providing false information to U.S. authorities about Arar, leading to his deportation. At the time, he was accused of consorting with terrorists.
People from various cultural communities have helped provide the RCMP training, teaching police, investigators, analysts and communications staff about their religion and culture.
The Canadian Islamic Congress welcomed this initiative.
